Abstract
Permanent magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG) plays as one of the major generator types applied in offshore wind farms thanks to its low costs and simple structure. In general, PMSG usually suffers faster and severer time-varying operation condition compared to that of onshore alternatives. As a result, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for offshore PMSG system becomes a very crucial issue to harvest the possible highest wind energy. Basically, several coupled PI loops are used in PMSG, by which the gain tuning is undertaken through trial-and-error, thus the optimality cannot be guaranteed while significant tuning time is also required. In order to handle this difficulty, this work utilizes a new developed political optimizer to optimally tune these PI gains under two typical cases studies, e.g., (a) step change of wind speed and (b) random wind speed, upon which the highest wind energy is able to be obtained at different wind speeds. Experimental results from Matlab/Simulink validate the reliability and superiority of PO compared against other well-known algorithms including genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimizer (PSO).
