IEEE Industry Applications Society For Research Enhancement and Career Development
Abstract of speech:
The Industry Applications Society (IAS) is the sixth largest society within the IEEE. There are more than 12000 members within the IAS. As a transnational organization, IAS is interested in advancement of the theory and practice of electrical and electronic engineering in the development, design, manufacture and application of electrical systems, apparatus, devices and controls to the processes and equipment of industry and commerce; promotion of safe, reliable and economic installations; industry leadership in energy conservation and environmental, health, and safety issues; creation of voluntary engineering standards and recommended practices; and the professional development of its membership.
For sustainable development, IAS has devoted significant amount of resources and efforts for its members, especially to young professional and students. The Chapters and Membership Department (CMD) of IAS has launched many programs to stimulus the participation of young professional and students.
This presentation discusses the available resources and opportunities within the IAS to enhance your research and career development.

Active, Reactive and Harmonic Power Sharing in Islanded Microgrids.
Abstract of speech:
In recent years, the electric power sectors worldwide have seen a gradual penetration of renewable energy based distributed generation (DG) units. When a DG or group of DG units operate as single controllable system, it is generally addressed as a Microgrid. These microgrids can be used to supply power to the main grid or can operate as an islanded grid. In an islanded microgrid, the intermittent nature of DG units (such as, photovoltaic and wind) makes the system highly dynamic. This keynote goes into details of islanded microgrids discussing the operation, control and challenges associated with these systems. Key control approaches to deal with the harmonics power sharing will be discussed.

Overcoming the Physical Limitations of Electric Machines.
Abstract of speech:
Motivated by a deceptively simple expression for the power conversion by an electric machine, we will develop from first principles a deeper understanding of what ultimately limits electric machine performance and where targeted research can relieve these limitations. Using motivating examples from aviation and renewable energy, we will examine the issues of how to balance the competing structural, thermal, and field constraints on an electric machine while driving toward increased torque and power densities. Choices to be discussed include whether it is better to separate constraints or to simultaneously address constraints through co-design.
Bio:

Power systems with high penetration of renewables and power electronics: Emerging stability issues and potential solutions
Abstract of speech:
The decades-old traditional power system is undergoing a fast transition with the most prominent feature, i.e., high penetration of renewables and power electronics. The dual high-penetration aspect of a modern power system not only significantly influence the classical system stability issues, but also introduces new types of instabilities. This talk first reviews the impacts from the high penetration of renewables and power electronics on power system stability. Then, it focuses on the emerging electromagnetic wideband oscillations. Actual oscillation events reported around the world are summarized. The challenges to the analysis and control of wideband oscillations are discussed. Some research results from the presenter’s group including, e.g, impedance network modeling and analysis, generator- and grid-side damping control, will also be introduced.
